How much does vanlife in Japan cost? 🚐

Japan has a reputation as being an expensive country to travel in and it definitely can be if you eat out for every meal, stay in fancy hotels and ride the bullet train everywhere. 🍣

Van life is actually a very affordable way to travel in Japan since you mostly don’t need to pay for overnight stays, you can cook in your van and your transportation costs depend on how often you fill up the gas.

We aim to spend around ¥150,000 (approx USD $1500) per month for 2 people. Some months it’s less and some months it’s more. Last month we spent more since the van needed its annual roadworthy check and we had to pay to ship the van and ourselves to Okinawa!

It’s also definitely possible to do vanlife in Japan cheaper than this if you cut out some of life’s luxuries such as eating out or visiting onsen!

We always think that if we lived in a house or apartment in one place we would probably spend a similar amount of money between rent and living costs. We prefer to live in the van since our house can travel with us!
