Hosono Kogen/Mount Mitsuji – 7.1km/9.4% – Inatori/Shizuoka Prefecture – Max.26%/Elev.711m

The Hosono Kogen climb (red/green line on road map) is a great climb offering a bit of everything – challenging gradients, spectacular views, excellent roads & poorly surfaced roads, quiet forest sections and expansive open views. The climb begins just south of Inatori at a non-descript entrance (picture 3). The only clue is the Hosono Kogen Geo Park sign (see arrow). The initial part of the climb is through a residential neighborhood with excellent road surface (picture 4). The climb then begins the forest section of the climb and the road surface begins to deteriorate. Gradients in parts of the forest section occasionally reach 20%. At the end of the forest section, make a right hand turn at the Tree House Camp site and soon the climb opens up (picture 2 – 400m/4km) and you can see the intimidating sight of Mt. Mitsuji. Hosono Kogen is a wide grassland area of Japanese pampas grass and where there is an occasional hang gliding school set up. Although there are several paths through the grasslands to reach Mt. Mitsuji, my strong recommendation is path marker #4 (picture 5) as it offers the widest road (the other paths are primarily for hikers.) The last km averages nearly 14% with pitches of +20% and that the road is quite narrow. Don’t go into the red as there is no room to recover! The views from the top include the Higashi Izu CC, Katase Windfarm, Inatori Highlands (North), Inatori Town, Sagami Bay (with Ohshima and Toshima visible on clear days). The Mount Mitsuji Windfarm (next post) is visible just south over the ridge line and the large windmills can be heard “swooshing” while at the summit. If there are any hikers at the summit, they often enthusiastically cheer you on!
ジオパークの看板です（矢印参照）。登りの最初の部分は、優れた路面のある住宅街を通ります（写真4）。その後、登りのは森林部分を開始し、路面は劣化し始めます。森林セクションは勾配は時々20％に達します。狭いです。ゆっくりして下さいね！サミットからの眺めは、東伊豆CC、片瀬ウィンドファーム、稲取高原（北）、稲取町、相模湾（晴れた日には大島と豊島が見える）。三筋山風力発電所（次の投稿）は尾根線のすぐ南に見え、サミットにいる場合は大きな風車の「シューッという音」が聞こえます。サミットにハイカーがいると、熱心に応援してくれることが多いです！
