Road Ride – 7/2 – 71km/1,170m Climbing – Uonuma/Niigata Prefecture ロードライド-7/2-71km/1,170m登山-魚沼/新潟県

I visited the Shiori Pass -24.5km/3.9% / Maximum Gradient – 17%/Elevation – 1,055m on the western edge of the Oze National Park in Niigata Prefecture last Sunday. I left from the dated Urasa Shinkansen Station and heading east, the majestic Mount Echigo-Komagatake (picture 3) loomed ahead. I turned left/north on Route 17 By-Pass which had little traffic, wide bike path, open views and absolutely no shade on such a hot day (35C) – picture 4). After arriving in Uonuma Town, I turned right on Route 352. The climb begins very gradual as the gradient is between 1-2 for 10km. It is not a difficult gradient but with the pass at 1,055m, it can sap the energy from the rider. The gradient begins to increase near the Oyu Bridge at 10.7km/270m (picture 5) with Mount Echigo-Komagatake always in the background. After passing through a wooded section at 13km, the sharp end of the climb begins at 14km/344m with switchbacks (picture 6) and a winding mountain road (picture 2). The mountain road was closed to vehicles from 14km with a simple barrier as the summit pass (just beyond picture 8) had large construction work due to a previous landslide. I proceeded with caution, however, the road condition was quite good although narrow at times. Most of the climb was in the sunlight as it wound along the mountain side (picture 7) which made for a hard climb. I had planned to descend the eastern side of the climb to visit the beautiful Lake Oku-tadami which is a man-made lake formed by the construction of the Okutadami dam. I plan to revisit in the fall. This difficult climb is the gateway for cyclists to the Oze National Park.
