Izu Road Ride – Sunday 1/29 – 80km/1,805m Climbing伊豆ロードライド 1/29(日) 80km/1,805mクライミング

I visited Izu after the heavy snow in many parts of Japan last week closed several of the mountain passes that I had been planning on visiting (picture 2). Izu is generally milder in temperature and the mountain roads are open almost year round. After checking multiple live camera locations, it appeared that the snow accumulated from about 400m but by Saturday had only some residual snow along the side of the road. From Izu Kogen Station, I headed north along Route 135 with a steady climb of 5km/3.4% to Izu Granpal Park (picture 3). I descended to Route 109 (picture 4) and rode along pretty Sagami Bay (picture 5) before continuing north Izu Taga to the Shikagatani Pass climb (“named” after the park along the Izu Skyline). The climb has a very steep gradient from 0.5km to 1km (14% average/maximum 18%) through the housing estate (picture 6). As I should have realized, the shaded curves from about 350m had residual snow in about 50m-100m sections (picture 1). I walked the first section but eventually just rode through these sections sticking to snow covered areas and avoiding the tire track sections. A new skill! I reached the summit (picture 7) and turned east to descend Kameishi Pass. I have practiced my poor descending skills on the wide and protected down hill lane. (picture 8). The other climbs that I wanted to visit were also isolated so I changed plans and just climbed Kameishi Pass (picture 9) before the return to Izu Kogen Station (picture 10).
