Road Ride Fails (Part 2) – Abe Pass/Shizuoka Prefecture – Nov 27th (94km/1,145m Climbing)
ロードライド失敗（パート2）-安倍峠/静岡県-11月27日（94km / 1,145m登り）

On November 27th, I returned to Shizuoka City to finish the climb to the summit of Abe Pass (1,465m-25.6km/5.3%) as my last trip ended due to my late start and fading daylight. The weather on 11/27 was perfect and when I had reached my previous spot (picture 2) I could see the inviting summit ahead. I had seen a number of cyclists descending so I was looking forward to the last section of the climb. I passed through the hot spring village of Umegashima with its steep gradient (~11%) compounded by the surface road doughnuts (picture 3). However, after passing through the small village, there was a large gate across the road (picture 1). The sign said that due to a recent typhoon, part of the road was washed out. Cars and motorbikes could not continue BUT hikers were allowed to continue cautiously. As I really wanted to visit the summit and this last section of road was the twisty fun part, I carried the bike around the barrier and continued riding. At 0.5km further, I came across the washed out section (picture 4) which was scary to see. There was a small man made metal walking bridge so I kept going. The road condition however was littered with debris and there were 2 spots where there was a small mound of rocks and sand. I climbed over these and continued. However, the third debris mound (picture 5) was not passable as the mound came right up/over the barrier and the risk of slipping over the edge was high. I had no idea how many more of these debris sections there were, so I decided to return to the station and began descending. I will definitely return again sometime next spring or summer as the climb looked great (pictures 6-7).
