Travelling by Train with Bike in Japan

Travelling by train with your bike opens up incredible cycling locations. Most trains (especially the Shinkansen trains) require that a bike be packed in a bag. This post will cover how I pack my bike for train travel (ie: returning to the same station after my ride). There are some variations (YT has many videos) – if I am riding my bike to a different station for the return trip, I will not include items C, D, F and H to save weight (picture 1) and change to a lighter (more difficult to fit) bag which i will put in my backpack that i take while I go riding. Although the process can seem difficult the first time you pack your bike, I can now pack my bike in about 5-7 minutes. My other recommendation is to change your clothes first before packing your bike.

Items – A. Bike Bag B. Rear Derailleur Protector (allows the bike to be stood up to save space) C. Cassette Cover D. Chainring Protector E. Carrying Strap F. Small Bungee Cord to prevent chain movement G. Straps to secure wheels to frame H. Fork Protector

Steps 1. Shift to the smallest cog in the rear cassette. 2. Release brake levers. 3. Turn Bike Over. 4. Remove Wheels (picture 2) 5. Insert fork protector (see picture 6/red arrow) 6. Cover Rear Cassette (see picture 6-red arrow). 7. Loop bungee cord around chain and secure (picture 3) and keep pedals level. 8. Cover chainring (picture 4) 9. Secure one end of the carrying strap to frame/seat post). 10. Insert and TIGHTLY (Important!) secure the rear derailleur protector (picture 5). 11. Secure wheels to frame (picture 6). 12. Loop carrying strap through carrying bag (picture 7). 13. Place the standing bike into the bag and cover the bike (picture 8). 14. Turn handlebars so that one end of the handle bar fits between the wheel spokes . 15. Close bag and secure carrying strap (picture 9). 16. Finished (picture 10).
