Let me interrupt my Vietnam content to remind everyone it’s “Shisa Day” today, April 3 😆 “Shisa” are the pairs of guardian lion dogs you see in front of people’s houses in Okinawa—they are a Ryukyuan/Okinawan cultural artifact and they ward off evil spirits. So why is it “shisa” day? Today is April 3rd; “shi” is a way to say the number 4 and “san” is 3 which is close enough to sa 😆 the shisa with the mouth closed keeps the good spirits in and the shisa with the mouth open keeps the bad spirits out 🊁
