ðž Good morning from Okiðž
Here are FIVE FUN FACTS ABOUT SAKURA (Cherry Blossoms).
Swipe all the way to the end to see me quite literally check a box on the bucket list journal that I started in 2016.
Always starting small & saving the best for last:
ðž The Sakura is Japanâs unofficial national flower. Officially, itâs chrysanthemum.
ðž The Sakura in Okinawa are the earliest to bloom (peak bloom in motobu was this past Sunday). Most of Japan (& Washington D.C.) likely wonât see them blooming until late March or April. The northern parts of Japan likely wonât see them bloom until May.
ðž There are over 20 types of Sakura. The most common one in mainland Japan is the Yoshino Cherry Tree, whereas the most common one in Okinawa is Kanhizakura (pictured 1st). The Kanhizakura tend to be a much darker pink, and the flowers bloom downward. The two common types found in Washington D.C. are the Yoshino Cherry Trees & the Kwanzan Cherry Trees (my personal favorites – swipe to see why ð).
ðž Hanami = an old Japanese tradition of picnicking underneath of the cherry blossoms. This word means âflower viewingâ. Rumor has it (aka Google says) that the best place for your hanami is at the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo, since they have 1k trees and all different varieties, too! Iâm hopefully that next year Iâll be able to have a picnic under the blossoms ððž maybe in Tokyo? ð
ð€¯And finally …
ðž NEITHER Japan nor Washington D.C. are considered the âcherry blossom capital of the worldâ !! The âcapitalâ is actually Macon, GEORGIA (USA)… home to 300,000 of the Yoshino Cherry Blossom Trees.
