Before the islands were annexed to Japan and became Okinawa, it was the Ryukyu Kingdom which had its own unique culture and history.â â

Katsuren Castle, one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, was a lovely visit.â â

Although not much of the original structure is left — just a few stone walls and the foundations — the castle sits atop a hill with an amazing view of the surrounding coast and is on its own worth the trip. â â
